Indian engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor Sterling and Wilson has secured an order for a hybrid microgrid powered by solar, diesel and battery energy storage in Western Africa.
The contract involves Africa's largest battery energy storage project that will see the deployment of 30 MWh of batteries across three sites, including the single largest battery of 17 MWh, the company said on Wednesday.
The microgrid will power behind-the-meter clients in the educational sector, enabling them to get off the grid.
Sterling and Wilson will be responsible for the design, EPC and operations and maintenance (O&M) of the microgrid project.
"We are extremely glad to have bagged our landmark first project in the hybrid and energy storage space, which not only consists of the largest battery installation in Africa till date, but also hopefully proves to be a marquee installation empowering future generations," said Deepak Thakur chief executive Hybrid and Energy Storage.
Sterling and Wilson recently formed a business unit to offer solutions for hybrid power plants using energy storage. It said the new Hybrid and Energy Storage unit is actively pursuing additional opportunities in a number of areas around the world.
