AES started as one of the first independent power producers (IPP) in the United States and is now a major supplier of power in 18 countries around the world.
Nearly 30 years after our founding, we brought together a group of AES engineers and commercial developers to work on applying advanced battery technology to the electric sector. As we began in 2008, we focused on validating solutions and meeting customer needs through established commercial structures familiar to our industry. After many years, multiple generations of storage products and over $150m of investment in development and commercial facilities this commitment to meeting established utility customer needs with battery solutions has resulted in the Advancion™ offering.

AES is the only global power company with a continuous presence in India since 1992 demonstrating its long term commitment to the Indian power market. AES was invited to Odisha, India, in 1992 to develop the Ib Valley thermal power plant soon after Government of India allowed private participation in the power sector. In 1998, AES participated in an international competitive bid process and was the successful bidder for 49% stake in Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) along with its management control.
AES acquired stake in Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) from the Government of Odisha through an International Competitive Bidding (ICB) process in 1998, a pioneer in the Power Sector Reforms in the country. A symbol of excellence in Public Private Partnership (PPP), OPGC is recognized for maintaining global standards in Safety, Environment and Managerial practices. Presently operating 2x210 MW thermal power plant at Ib Thermal Power Station (ITPS), OPGC has started construction for setting up 2x660 MW super critical units as part of capacity expansion.
