Stationary Energy Storage India (SESI)

Year 2022 has been phenomenal year for the energy storage Industry growth in India and its states. Many important developments in terms of policies & regulations and energy storage tenders have been released from both Central & State nodal agencies and awareness has been increased in Indian states about the importance of energy storage addition to achieve . Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), a PSU under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has recently concluded the bidding process for setting up of Pilot Projects of 500 MW/1000 MWh Standalone BESS under Tariff-Based Global Competitive Bidding (ESS-I) at Fatehgarh III Substation of Powergrid. Legal status for Energy Storage Systems (ESS) has been issued by Ministry of Power (MoP) wherein ESS has been designated as a Power System element which can be utilized as a Generator, Transmission or Distribution element. Energy Storage Obligation trajectory till 2029-30 has been notified by MoP which is believed to boost the growth of energy storage deployment at Indian States and set a target for ESS. These developments are expected to flourish further in next coming years and Indian Industry is expected to witness great growth in adopting emerging advanced technologies including energy storage. National Electricity Plan by Central Electricity Authority projects battery energy storage system (BESS) (5-hour) requirement in 2031-32 which will vary from 51 GW to 84 GW. A PSP-based capacity of 18.82 GW and five-hour BESS capacity of 51.56 GW is likely to be required to meet the peak electricity demand and energy requirement in 2031-32.

IESA is working with central and state government departments from past 10 years towards growth of the energy storage sector in India and constantly advocating on the importance of creating the energy storage target for India. Under IESA’s Beyond Batteries Initiative, IESA is also working with alternate storage technologies like a flywheel, CAES, Gravity Storage, Thermal Storage, etc for stationary applications. This is an interesting time to be in energy storage space. MoP is expected to finalise energy storage policy for India where in IESA has actively contributed in shaping up of these requirements. Central will soon launch a production linked incentive (PLI) scheme for grid-level energy storage. Central Nodal Agency SECI and  many states like Haryana, Gujarat, UP etc has announced energy storage projects which was in tendering stage in the year 2022. Types of tenders included Hybrid RE + Storage, Peak Power Supply, Standalone ESS, RTC tenders etc which accounts for approximately 5+ GWh  tendered, 5+ GWh  awarded, more than 30+ GW  announced. IESA is closely working with its member companies, energy storage technology providers, battery manufacturers, key renewable players, state nodal agencies and utilities and tender authorities to develop energy storage market.

In view of the above developments and with an intent on running the active dialogue in this space , we are delighted to announce the Stationary Energy Storage in India (SESI) Conference on 17 February 2023 focused on the roadmap and outlook for stationary energy storage.
