Electric Buses for Chandigarh were among the major announcements made for the city. To make city more Eco-friendly, CTU has finally come up with Electric Bus in Chandigarh. Residents of city will see such buses running on roads. To waive off vehicular pollution such step was necessary for maintaining Chandigarh as green city.

Electric buses are successfully running abroad and on trial run in various cities of India including New Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune. Now, the transport department has asked Tata Motors to ply bus on a trail run in Chandigarh. Initially, the project will be started on a pilot basis on a couple of routes with the eight to ten buses.

Features about Electric Bus

  • The electric bus estimated to cover around 150 km to 180 km with one time charging.
  • CTU has made arrangements of charging buses on its depots. Under the plan, the Transport Department will convert one of its existing bus depots into a clean fuel depot for the electric buses and all kinds of facilities for the buses will be provided there.
  • Officials said that bus is zero emission vehicle and safer than usual buses running in city.
  • This electric bus for Chandigarh has comfortable seating facility and all features for safety of passengers including AC, public address system, CCTV camera and firefighting equipment.
  • Bus has seating capacity of 26 people and 9 passengers can stand inside it. Not only this, provision has been made for two differently abled persons.
  • After charging for five hours, the bus can run around 250 km.
  • The operational cost of electric buses are much lower than cost of usual buses.

Electric Bus in Chandigarh 

No CNG, No PNG, No Petrol or Diesel. It’s 100% Electric to develop UT as green city. The electric bus will be run on trial basis, to check the effectiveness of the bus. Manufacturers of Electric buses have been asked to submit the proposal along the related infrastructure needed for running the electric buses in Chandigarh. Under its flagship FAME India (faster adoption and manufacturing of hybrid and electric vehicles in India) scheme, center is providing subsidy to introduce zero-emission retrofitted electric buses. Under the FAME India, the Union Government will fund up to 75 per cent cost of the buses.
