Lithium-Ion ESS will directly replace NiMH systems in hundreds of hybrid buses
EnerDel, Inc. and King County Metro have finalized a 5-year supply agreement for lithium-ion Energy Storage Systems (ESS). EnerDel is a leading supplier of advanced lithium-ion batteries and ESS for heavy-duty transportation and hybrid power applications. EnerDel will furnish and deliver up to 48 PP320-689-LP Vigor+ ESS per year for installation into the Seattle-based transit authority’s hybrid bus fleet through 2019.
The first order of Vigor+ packs is targeted for delivery to King County Metro in August this year, and will initiate ESS upgrades for its New Flyer Allison Hybrid bus fleet. The transit authority required a complete ESS to fit into the footprint of its current NiMH battery systems. A retrofitted solution needed to be virtually seamless, and have the ability to maintain established diagnostic reporting. EnerDel’s solution met and improved upon the direct replacement requirements. Rated at 20 kWh, the EnerDel ESS delivers over three times the rated energy of the existing NiMH system.
An EnerDel demonstration pack has operated failure-free in regular passenger service for over one year in the King County Metro service area. “We are pleased to see EnerDel’s lithium-ion ESS offering selected as the solution of choice for the aging NiMH hybrid fleet by King County Metro.
